Kennesaw State University's Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society


Kennesaw State University’s history department supports a chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, a national history honors society for students and professors founded in 1917. The following is Phi Alpha Theta’s mission statement:

“We are a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. We seek to bring students and teachers together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways.”


To join Phi Alpha Theta, students must possess the following qualifications:
1) 12 credits of history courses, 9 of which must have been completed at KSU
2) An overall grade point average above 3.0
3) A grade point average in history courses above 3.1

Phi Alpha Theta Membership Application


To join Phi Alpha Theta there is a one-time fee of $55. This includes $50 for national dues and $5 for chapter dues. Please attach a check payable to “Phi Alpha Theta” to your completed application.


The KSU chapter of Phi Alpha Theta meets monthly during the course of the academic year for routine business. Special events include regional and national conferences, a spring induction ceremony, and the annual October trivia contest with the history faculty.
