Fred Carroll is a lecturer in the Department of History and Philosophy. He worked as a daily newspaper reporter in North Carolina and Virginia for nine years before pursuing a career in academia. He earned his doctorate in history from the College of William and Mary. His book, Race News: Black Journalists and the Fight for Racial Justice in the Twentieth Century (University of Illinois Press, 2017), examines the political and professional evolution of modern black journalism. He has taught courses in U.S. history, world history, and African American history.
